Hello,

Please try to remember to discharge the laptops when students return them.  We have had a few of them come up as still being charged out when a person wants to use one, this results in someone having an over $100 fine.

Power Surges

Over the weekend we experienced our 2nd power surge of the term. They don't seem to be contained to just our building or even just campus. In the case of a power surge, its always a good idea to call Campus Safety and make them aware. Depending on the length of the outage, it can trip a false alarm with our security system. This way Campus Safety can notify ADS and prevent any confusion. They can also reset the alarm if necessary.

If there's a surge while you're at the desk (specifically during the day) make sure to coordinate with Jeanne and/or Heidi so we don't get more than one person calling Campus Safety.

Olympics on Lobby TV

Over the next couple weeks we're going to attempt to show the Olympics on the lobby TV as much as possible. Unfortunately, the major station showing Olympic events (NBC Sports) is not a part of the college's cable line-up.

I'm adding a link to the ISD site homepage with a link to the page with the TV listings for the Olympics and the corresponding channel numbers for each station on the college's cable line-up. Our cable package isn't an option when you're looking at the line-up for specific cable providers,  so you can just put 60540 in as the zip code and use whatever default cable provider is listed.

It seems we'll be able to get most events during primetime and randomly on the weekends. So please take a few minutes when you sit at the desk to look at this and see if there are any events we can broadcast during your time at the desk.

Heaters and plugs

We have had an incredibly brutal winter and I know with people taking shortcuts through the library the lobby gets extremely cold, that's why we have the extra space heaters out there.  If you would like to plug in all three heaters at the desk in order to not blow out a breaker please plug one by the public printer, one by the staff dry erase board and one by the student assistant computer.  The one by the student assistant computer should not be plugged into the power strip but into the actual silver box plug.  If the power strip stops working please flip the switch on the front of the power strip as well as the switch on the side of the power strip.

Mouse goes missing

Hello!

We are having that problem again where students are using a computer and the mouse just suddenly disappears.  To fix that all they have to do is push ctrl, alt, and delete at the same time.  The mouse will come back and they can just cancel.

Java Updates

ITS sent out an email that there was an update for Java that could affect some browsers accessing certain content (called applets) on some websites. There is a fix for this until ITS can push out another update. If you encounter a student that seems to be having this kind of issue (as always feel free to call me if you're unsure) here are the instructions for fixing it straight from the ITS email:

1. Click on the Start menu and select Control Panel

2. Select Programs and then click on the Java icon
3. Click on the Security tab in the Java Control Panel window
4. Click the “Edit Site List” button
5. Click the Add button, then type the URL of the website you would like to whitelist. Click OK.
6. Click Continue to confirm.

This will "white list" the website and allow access to the content. This is on a per-computer basis though and not a network setting that will follow them around.
