Internet Explorer Compatibility and Firefox Fix

We're starting to receive reports from some students that the version of Internet Explorer on campus computers is too old to support some websites, especially Google products like Google Docs. Students should be using the campus' officially supported Firefox browser, but many students are experiencing problems with Firefox crashing or not working.

ITS has put out a fix for the Firefox issue that seems to fix the problems in many cases, but very few students know about it and neither do the staff. If students come to you with issues with Firefox (or issues with Internet Explorer because their Firefox doesn't work), you can recommend they try to fix it with the following steps.

  1. Open the icon on the desktop for Zen Works Adaptive Agent.
  2. Double click on the Firefox Crash Fix.
  3. Try opening Firefox again.
It may not be apparent that anything is happening when you click on Firefox Crash Fix, but it's working in the background. This has fixed the problem for most students that are experiencing issues with Firefox.

Returned Kindle processing reminder

We've had a few Kindle check-outs lately, so I just wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone about a few processing details both for checking out and checking in the Kindles.

One of the most important things is to remember to update the sign behind the desk. All of the desk staff use that sign to determine which Kindles are in or out when patrons ask at the desk.

Also, remember that during the day you need to find Heidi, Jeanne, myself, Belinda, or Emily (probably in that order) to process Kindles that are coming back. DO NOT DISCHARGE THE KINDLE YOURSELF. We need to make sure that all of the parts are there and that nothing is damaged before the Kindle is discharged or we lose the information about who had it checked out.

SCs need to put the Kindle back in the vault and put a note on it that it needs to be checked in. DO NOT DISCHARGE THE KINDLE!!!!

Kindles and Laptops

We now have additional laptops available for 3 hour check out.  They are all re-labeled, and the cabinet has been re-labeled to accommodate them all.  They are also in Voyager, and should be all ready to check out.

Since the cabinet is now full with the laptops, the Kindles have been moved into the vault.  If you process a Kindle that has been returned, please be sure it is fully charged before you return it to the vault.

Getting the color printer to print in color...again

Hello!

People seem to be having the same problem of getting the color printer to actually print in color.  If this happens, please go to the start menu and then select "devices and printer."  Right click over the reference color printer and select printer properties.  Click on "device settings" and scroll all the way to the bottom to "device type" and change it to "color." Click apply and then ok.

Let me know if you have any questions or if this doesn't fix it.

Thanks!
Heidi

Wordless Picture Books

Students in one of the Education classes currently have an assignment that requires them to find a "wordless picture book."  As we've had this request a number of times, and since they are not particularly easy to find in CardinalCat, I have created a list of the ones that I am aware of.  If you go to Research By Subject>Education>Children's Books About..., you will now see a link for Wordless Picture Books.  I can't guarantee that this is all of them, but these are all that I am aware of in our collection!

Instructional Media Tidbits

We have recently learned that a professor is telling their students that they can get card readers from Tom for their assignments.  They cannot.  In Carnegie the computers have card readers, you can send them there.  Secondly, another professor is telling students they can get actual film cameras from Tom.  Tom doesn't have these so just send them away.  Talk to Tom if you have any questions.

Archives Student Assistant Applications

Kim is now accepting applications for an Archives Student Assistant. There is a link to the description and application in the library's latest blog post, as well as on the Archives' website. Please note that the application can be filled out electronically or printed, so there may be students dropping paper applications off at the ISD until the position is filled.

If a student drops an application off, please put it in Kim's mailbox.

Door Stops

Feel free to prop open the outside doors anytime you want to.  You can find the stops in a box behind the information services desk.  Please be sure that when you close the doors after they have been propped open to put the stops back in the box.  We lost all of our stops last year and I don't want to lose them again!

Thanks!

JPN-203

Hello,

There are a few items on reserve for Japanese 203, there is a book, a set of cassettes and cassette players.  Be sure you check each one of the items out for the patron because we do not have any cassette players in the building.

Thanks!

4 New I-Share Libraries

Four new I-Share libraries, Morton College [MRT], Richland Community College [RCC], Southeastern Illinois College [SEI], and Southwestern Illinois College [SWI], will be online for Universal Borrowing this week, and their collections will be fully loaded into the I-Share union catalog in early February.

We can  now honor onsite borrowing from the new libraries’ patrons and may begin to see items borrowed by our patrons from their collections. Likewise, our library’s patrons may also now borrow onsite at any of the four new libraries as well.

Double Log in Issues

Hello!

Some of you may have noticed that we have been having double log in issues where the screen just keeps asking the person to log in over and over.  When this happens, ask the student to move to another computer, then please turn off the computer and turn it back on, not just restart.  Then please try logging in.  If it this does not fix it please send in a ticket to the helpdesk with me cc'ed

They are going to be doing an update next week that should fix this issue.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!
Heidi
