Cardinal Research Minute video tutorials

Hi, everyone,

I would encourage you all to watch the Cardinal Research Minute video tutorials available on the library's website on the Writing research guide. They are brief (1-2 minutes) videos that walk viewers through the basics of using Oesterle Library resources - creating your I-Share account, renewing books, requesting articles through ILL, etc. Encourage your friends and classmates to take a look as well!

Downloading EBL Books

There are 4 actions that "create a loan" of a CARLI EBL book: viewing a title for more than 5 minutes, printing, copying, or downloading. Once a title has been "loaned" 9 times, CARLI will permanently add the title to the collection by purchasing it.

In order to download any title from EBL, the user must have Adobe Digital Editions installed on his or her device. Adobe Digital Editions is a program that provides digital rights management (DRM) options to publishers to ensure their e-content isn't being unlawfully downloaded or shared. Adobe Digital Editions is not a program that is available on any campus computers.

That being said, we're not going to be instructing students to download any of the EBL ebooks. If they would like to download it on to their own device and/or are familiar with it already they are more than welcome to download the ebooks, but we are not going to provide instruction or support with installation or management of Adobe Digital Editions.

Instead we will be recommending that students print to PDF if they would like to access a portion of one of these ebooks offline. This process will very much mirror the process that students use to download portions of ebooks in EBSCO databases. As with EBSCO ebooks, there will be a limited number of pages that can be "printed" at one time that will vary based on a number of factors including the length of the book and publisher.

Elizabeth is working on two separate tutorials: one that will talk about access the EBL books and another that will instruct on how to print to PDF.

Tutorials, LibGuides and Videos for Instruction

There are a number of tutorials, LibGuides and a video that are being used for a variety of groups this fall. Here's a list... and notes about where you'll find them on our website:

English 115 and English 125 Library Services Tutorial: This can be accessed from the "Citing Sources, Research Tips and Tutorials>Online Tutorials" link on the left hand side of the website.

What is Information Literacy?: This video is being used in the FYE classes. It can be found from the same link as the above tutorial.

Oesterle Library's guide to Excellence, the City, & the Good Life: This LibGuide is designed for use by the FYE classes. It can be found on the 1st tab of the rotating articles in the lower/middle section of the website.

Zeitoun LibGuide: This guide to accompany the first year summer reading selection may be used by FYE, English and other first year classes. It can be found on the 2nd tab of the rotating articles in the lower/middle section of the website.

Global Environmental Change: India LibGuide: This is the campus-wide focus of the Office of International Programs for the 2010-2011 academic year. It can be found on the 4th tab of the rotating articles in the lower/middle section of the website.

English 115/125 Library Tutorial

Lots of questions regarding the English 115/125 tutorial are coming and most of them relate to the quiz that students are expected to take once they have completed all of the modules.

Once the student has gone through all of the modules the final link takes them to the Blackboard login screen. They need to login and go to their English 115/125 course Blackboard page. Then if they click on the Assignments heading they will see a Library Tutorial Quiz.

Where the big issue lies is that some of the students are getting ahead of their instructors and are ready to complete the quiz before the instructor has even put the quiz into Blackboard. So if a student comes to you and says they can't find the quiz, take them through the above steps. If they are in the Assignments section of their English 115/125 Blackboard page and still don't see the quiz then they need to talk to their instructor.
