Free Supplies for Patrons

Hello,

We are always happy to give out paper clips and staplers. We are always happy to let people use our scissors, tape, three hole punch, paper cutter, staple removers, etc. Please do not give people alligator clips, they are pretty expensive. Please do not give out things like this, they are expensive and we are not a supply place for people just to give stuff away. Patrons need to take care of themselves for items like this.

Update: EBSCO Problems

Emily haven't heard back from EBSCO, but PsycInfo and ATLA appear to be working at this point. Please contact her if you experience any further difficulties.

PsychInfo Problems

Oesterle Library has unexpectedly lost access to PsycInfo. Emily is working with EBSCO to resolve this problem ASAP and will provide more information when it's available.

EBSCO problems

Right now ATLA-religion and PsychInfo are down. The have been notified. They are working as quickly as they can to fix it but that is the situation right now. We will keep you up to date. If you notice any other databases down please let Emily know.

Reserves: MLS-538

Students may come in asking for an article in Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal for the class MLS-538, Gerald Gems' class. It is on the list as WSPAJ.

Flash

I have been receiving reports periodically that Flash needs updating and we need administrator rights to do that. I contacted ITS about it and they informed me that it is probably because the patron is using Internet Explorer. Have them use firefox or chrome. If that doesn't solve the problem please ask them to move to a different computer and write down that computer's number and report it to me. If that doesn't solve it, have them talk to ITS.

Bowker Update

Service Interuptions Due to Weather Out East

We have received a notice from ProQuest/Bowker that several of their services have been affected by the power outages in the Northeast. You may notice problems with Books in Print, Syndetic Solutions (the book cover images and additional info that's normally found in the catalog), and RCL/Resources for College Libraries. Bowker staff hope to have generator power running by the end of business today, but they predict that access will be patchy until full power has been restored to their area. If you have any questions, please let Emily know.

Gems' class article

We're not sure if this is going to come up again, or if the reading was due already. There was an article for Gems' class that was listed on the syllabus as being from the Journal of American Jewish History. The journal is actually just called American Jewish History, so people were having trouble finding it.

WiFi

Just a reminder that our WiFi network is only available to current students, faculty, and staff. Basically, only anyone with a current NCC login. If you encounter anyone who is upset because they believed otherwise, please feel free to direct them to John or myself and we would be happy to explain the policy to them.

Skeleton

We had a student in last night that had been told we had a skeleton that could be used for studying purposes. This is, in fact, not true. We do have a torso in the curriculum work room, but it is not sufficient for the purposes the science students need when they're studying the skeleton. There are some available in the Science Center, but, as was the case last night, when there's an upcoming test they're in pretty high demand. So if a science student comes looking for a skeleton, we do not have one.

Students from this class should be asking for me to remove certain videos from reserve so they can check them out. They should only be coming 8-5pm, Monday through Friday.

Gerald Gems' Class

The students from Gerald Gems' MLS-538 class will be coming in to look for the article The Prep Bowl in the Journal of Sport History. He has it labeled as from volume 22, but it is actually volume 23. We have it in the bound section of the periodicals. If it's not there it may be on the periodicals cart or in the photocopy room.

Lab Software

Jeanne received a question this morning about the availability of certain software in the labs on campus. We knew the library labs didn't have it, so we sent the student to Carnegie because we were sure it would be in one of the labs over there. After the student walked away, Jeanne had the great idea to check the ITS website.

She found that ITS does, in fact, have a list of software available in different labs that might come in handy if you ever receive a question like this. It is available here.

Harry Potter Trivia Prizes

The winners of the Harry Potter Trivia contest have been selected, and they will be notified later today. All prizes will be placed in a box in the vault along with a list of the winners. Each prize has the winner's trivia sheet clipped or otherwise attached to it. As the winners come in to claim their prizes, please make sure that the right prize (there are duplicates of some items) goes to the right person and write your initials next to their name on the list. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to let Emily know!

SXF Update

CARLI completed the upgrade from SFX v.3 to SFX v.4 earlier today. This is a behind-the-scenes change, so we shouldn't notice any problems. In fact, we might notice that the Get Article process is a teeny bit faster! If you do get any complaints about the Get Article button not working in a database, please let Emily or Jennie know right away. CARLI would like to be notified ASAP if anything unexpected happens.

Print Credits

I have noticed that people have been running out of print credits. When it happens on the Windows 7 computers it tells the patron that the printing job has been canceled. Just ask the patron to check their print credits. The way they do that is to log into Merlin and click on the link that says replenish print credits. The amount will be right there.

please tell me the computer number and location. Unfortunately it means that ITS has to come in and fix that particular computer. Just have the student move to a different computer and try printing again.

Chemistry 100

Hello,

Prof Rodriguez has put a chapter from her book on reserve. The students will come thinking that two chapters are on reserve. In order for us not to break copyright law we have only put the one chapter on, the professor knows this. It is located in the photocopy bin with the call number P1084-A1.

Harry Potter Exhibit!

Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine opens this coming Sunday, April 10^th, in the Tyson Curriculum Center. Part of our agreement for hosting the exhibit is providing basic security for to make sure that it’s kept in good condition for our guests as well as the libraries that will be hosting the panels in the coming months. If everyone helps out with this, it shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes from each of us each day. Here’s what you can do to help:

Students: At the beginning of each Access shift, take a minute or two to walk through Tyson. Straighten the brochures and glance at each of the panels to make sure they haven’t been marked on or bumped out of place. If you notice anything unusual, please let Heidi, Denise, or Emily know right away. Please do not touch the fronts of the panels—fingerprints will show up as annoying smudges for guests who are trying to read the text.

ISD: As you finish up each shift at the ISD, take a minute or two to walk through Tyson. Updates

Just a few things I want to call to your attention

1. There are no locks on the printers anymore, so therefore we do not need keys. Please just keep an eye on the printers during this transition, let us know if there is any suspicious behavior.

2. You will notice that the televisions have moved from Giere to the study alcove above Giere. Go check out where they are and where they were, I think it's an improvement.

3. There are three sets of cassette tapes on reserve for Intermediate Japanese III, you will see them on the reserve shelf with the call number F1384 tape1-3. DO NOT DESENSITIZE THESE ITEMS! Also, we have two cassette players and headphones on reserve for patrons to check out with these cassettes. NONE OF THESE ITEMS ARE TO LEAVE THE BUILDING! There is a third cassette player upstairs with the tvs, people do not have to check this one out to use, it's just out.

Printers

The main printer key has broken and the other ones do not work properly. I have been trying to get ITS over here but they have not come, so to refill try playing with the locks with and without the keys. Some of the locks just work by moving the latch.

HPE 247 video

We've had some students in from the Human Anatomy (HPE 247) class looking for a video. They don't appear to have been given a title or call number to look for, but we are now pretty sure that they are looking for:

Sports Medicine Evaluation Series, volume 5 (the wrist and hand)

I've placed this on reserve for that class (instructor Amanda Tracy) just in case we get more students in wanting to use it.

Springer ebook update from Emily

Good news! CARLI and Springer have finally learned to play nicely together, and our Springer e-book collection is now live--and I've been promised that it's permanent this time. CARLI finally sent Springer the finalized, State of Illinois approved license agreement late last week (folks at both CARLI and Springer have confirmed that this was the problem all along), and Springer's tech folks finalized setting up our long-ago promised perpetual access earlier this afternoon.

What does this mean for those of you at the ISD? 1) SpringerLink ebooks should work now...all the time. 2) If they don't, there could be something wrong on either end. Try again in 10-20 minutes to see if you can get in. If it's still not working, please do let me know so that I can dig for answers.

More Windows 7 Updates

With the Windows 7 upgrade they do not have that nice little money icon to tell us how many print credits a student has left. The way a student can check how many credits they have left is to log on to Merlin, "add print credits" and in that screen it should tell people how much they have left.

Also, the fishbowl printer is not called the fishbowl anymore, it is now the small lab. ITS is trying to transition that name out, so please call the fishbowl the small lab.

Update 2: Windows 7 Upgrade

We had another report today of a student in the fish bowl that printed to the color printer and her document came out in black and white. Since this is the only report we know of since everything was deemed "ok" we're going to consider it a fluke for the time being. Please let Heidi (or myself if she isn't here) know if you receive and more reports like this.

Windows 7 Upgrade

So there have been many issues regarding the Windows 7 upgrade. First off the color printer will not print in color from any of the computers that have windows 7, which should only be the reference room right now. So, if a person wants to print in color, ask them to move to the 97lab, fishbowl, or the periodicals room.

Second, when you try to print an old document in Word from any of the computers with the Windows 7 upgrade it blocks it because of the macros. The way to solve this is to click the Microsoft Office Button, then the Word Options, click Trust Center, click Trust Center Settings, click Macro Settings, and then click Enable all Macros, and click ok. Have the patron save the document, then close out of word, and then reopen the document. They should be good after that. I have printed out these directions from the help screen and put them on the clip board if you need them.

Third, I have been getting reports of many things missing from this upgrade such as Maple and mathematical font from PowerPoint, I have told ITS these things and they say they will be solved by tomorrow. Please let me know if anyone reports anything else like this or that these things weren't actually solved so I can tell ITS right away.

I will try to keep you all updated, I guess they will be upgrading the fishbowl soon.

Update: VuFind Password Resets

Although many have attempted to reset their VuFind password, it wasn't until yesterday (thanks to Heidi) that someone actually released the email from their GWAVA digest. ITS says this should fix the problem and VuFind password reset emails should no longer get trapped in the spam filter.

However, if someone claims to have requested a password reset in VuFind and never actually received the email, you may still want to have them check GWAVA. Directions for doing this can be found in my post from yesterday. Also please let myself or John know if you encounter someone who has this problem.

For your reference the email address that these password resets come from is noreply@carli.illinois.edu and the subject of the email is VuFind Password Reset.

VuFind Password Resets

It seems that password reset emails for VuFind from CARLI are getting caught in the college's spam filter. John is working with ITS to solve this solution. In the meantime, these emails are showing up in the daily GWAVA digest. But we all know waiting until the end of the day probably won't appease our users. So here's another work around.

Have them go into an old GWAVA email (possibly in their trash) and click on the Manage My Quarantine button at the upper right hand corner of the list of spam emails. Then they'll login with their NCC username and password. There should be an email with VuFind in the subject from a CARLI address listed. This email contain the information about resetting their password.

Stay tuned for more information on the (hopefully) easier resolution to this problem.

Accessing LibStats

Hi everyone! There seem to be some issues with accessing LibStats in certain browsers. I'm not sure what's causing this because it isn't consistent. i.e. I can only access it using Firefox at my desk, while June and Heidi have only been able to access it using IE at the ISD.

If you're trying to access LibStats and receive an error message or just a blank screen, try another browser. I promise you I didn't take it down or move it to another URL as the error message may tell you. :-)

Cassettes on Reserve

You will see that there are two sets of cassettes on reserve for JPN-351. Tom has kindly put a cassette player in the Giere audiovisual center. They will just need headphones to use it.

Chinese Characters on Computers

In response to a student question yesterday if we had computers on which he could type Chinese characters, I consulted ITS and Norval and have learned (some of you probably already know this) that any recent vintage computer can be configured to do so. (Some of us have been here long enough to remember we used to have a designated computer in the fishbowl, but we didn't know what the current availability was.)
